HOWARDS GROVE — The Howards Grove School Board approved the final school budget of $10,569,576 for the 2015-2016 school year at the regular board meeting Monday by a vote of 5-0.

The tax levy was also approved with a levy of $4,151,593, which is a decrease of .6 percent, for the 2015-16 school year by a vote of 5-0.

The student count was 847 on the third Friday of September, which dropped the three-year average to 853 students.

State aid for 2014 increased to $4,772.280, an increase of .39 percent. The mill rate is $9.55 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, a decrease of 44 cents or 4.4 percent.

The board members approved a short-term borrowing agreement of up to $500,000 at 3.5 percent with the National Exchange Bank for the 2015-16 school year.

Brian Grunewald of Schenk and Associates updated the school on the recent audit results. Grunewald reported that the school is in good financial standing and the general fund balance is in good shape.

Northview Principal Teresa Keehn presented the board with an update about a grant from Academic Parent Teacher Teams (APTT). Howards Grove is one of 10 schools participating in the grant.

APTT was developed in 2008 to help engage families with the school for junior kindergarten and third grade. The process starts with engagement between the school and the family. Then the family is invited to a classroom meeting with discussion and an overview of grade level skill, data and activity. Finally the parents and teachers interact in setting S.M.A.R.T. (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time-related) goals for the student.
