Campbellsport upsets top seeded Falls

Falls News photo by Steve Ottman The No. 1 seeded Sheboygan Falls High School volleyball team fell to No. 5 seed Campbellsport 3-2 in a WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal contest Thursday, Oct. 22, in Sheboygan Falls.

Campbellsport (23-12) won the match on scores of 19-25, 25-11, 22-25, 25-18 and 15-10 to advance to the regional finals.

On Saturday, Campbellsport defeated Chilton 3-2 to move on to the sectional semifinal.

“I’m very proud of how this team played,” said Cougars’ head coach Wendy Kramer. “Our front line girls, Mackenzie Ebert, Tiffani Anderson and Jamie Schrauth, played really tough for us.”

Falls finished its season at 25- 11 overall.

“The girls showed good hustle tonight and had a lot of good offensive plays,” said Falcons’ head coach Nicole Widder. “There were good rallies by both teams and in the fifth game Campbellsport really showed they wanted it. We had a hard time shutting down their middle hitters.”

In the first game, Campbellsport and Falls went back and forth before the Cougars moved ahead 12-9.

The Falcons rallied back for a 19-15 lead on serves from senior Erika Van Engen.

Campbellsport came back to take a 20-18 lead, but Falls finished strong to secure the 25-19 win.

The Cougars opened strong with a 4-0 lead in game two and pushed the lead to 15-5, before finishing with a 25-11 win.

The Falcons recovered to win game three, after making two comebacks when trailing 13-10.

Falls overtook Campbellsport 18-16 on a back line save from senior Martha Mathieu and set to Van Engen.

The Falcons later wrapped up a 25-22 victory.

Falls started game four with a 7-3 lead. The Cougars then made a 10-2 run to take a 13-9 lead. The Falcons never recovered as Campbellsport pulled away to win game four 25-18.

In the fifth game, the Cougars gained the early edge 5-1 and pushed the lead to 10-5. Falls cut the lead to 10-7, before losing 15- 10.

“The girls should be proud of the season they had,” Widder commented. “They had a lot of good accomplishments.”

Senior Kim Schwobe led the Falls team with 94.7 percent serving, nine kills, 20 assists and two digs.

Van Engen added 13 kills, five blocks and two digs. Senior Abbey Quasius made five kills. Senior Autumn Horn had three blocks. Junior Brianna Berg collected five kills. Senior Martha Mathieu made three digs and Morgan DePagter served two aces and finished with 94.1 percent serving.
