County repeats as Bicycle Friendly Community

Sheboygan County is once again named a bronze level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists.

The county first received this designation in 2011 and the current designation runs through 2019. Designations run for five years and then communities must reapply.

Sheboygan County is the only county in the state, and one of only fifteen in the country to have a countywide designation.

The BFC award recognizes Sheboygan County’s commitment to improving conditions for bicycling through investment in bicycling promotion, educational programs, infrastructure, and pro-bicycling policies.

The BFC program is revolutionizing how communities evaluate their quality of life, sustainability and transportation networks, all while allowing them to benchmark their progress and work toward improving their bicycle-friendliness.

The application to become a BFC is rigorous and an educational tool in itself. The renewal process and four levels of the award provide a clear incentive for communities to continuously improve.

Keith Abler, chairman of the Planning, Resources, Agriculture & Extension Committee that oversees the County Planning and Conservation Department stated, “The efforts the county has taken to improve cycling are a great benefit to the community and help put us at the forefront. Residents of all ages, but particularly millennials and retirees, want and demand to have these types of assets in the communities in which they choose to live.”

Sheboygan County recently extended the Shoreland 400 Rail Trail from Martin Avenue north to North Avenue, intends to begin construction on a trail running adjacent to Taylor Drive in 2016, and will soon begin designing a 2.5 mile trail to run along the electric utility corridor on Sheboygan’s south side, just north of Weeden Creek Rd. The latter two projects are being funded by the Nonmotorized Transportation Pilot Program (NOMO).
