Yancy powers Tigers to win in Big East debut

NEENAH – Junior forward Sam Yancy erupted for 26 points to ignite the Howards Grove Tigers to a 60-51 win over host St. Mary Catholic in girls basketball action Tuesday night.

The game was the first for both teams in the inaugural Big East Conference. The Tigers upped their overall record to 2-0 while the Zephyrs slipped to 1-1.

“Offensively, Sam Yancy was our top player last night. They really had no answer for her inside,” said Tiger head coach Heidi Georgeff.

“She did an excellent job running the floor and getting open in the paint.”

Brittany Schaller contributed 14 points and Kaitlynn Near hit nine for HGHS. Schaller scored 12 points in the second half, including 6-for-7 at the foul line.

“Every time we started to pull away they hit big shots and were able to keep the game close,” said Georgeff.

“We got to the free-throw line down the stretch and were able to seal the win with some big freethrows. Ashley Reinemann was 2-for-2 and Brittany Schaller was 5-for-6 in the last few minutes of the game from the line.

“We made some mental mistakes, defensively, and left people open and didn’t get out on their shooters. We have things to work on. It’s early in the season, so I am just happy to bring home the win,” added the coach.

Senior guard Maddie Uhlenbrauck led the Zephyrs’ scoring with 19.
