Free child eye exams offered

New Holstein Lions will be doing Free Eye screening for children with the new SPOT camera.

The New Holstein Lions Club will again be doing free eye screening of children during their annual Breakfast with Santa, Sunday December 6th at the Holy Rosary Gym from 8 AM to 11:30 AM.

This year the club will be using a new device called a SPOT camera. With the SPOT camera, a child can be successfully checked at a very young age. Children can even be tested while on a parent’s lap.

All families with young children 1-7 are encouraged to stop by and have their children tested. Older children can also be tested. Children with eye glasses who have not been checked lately can be tested wearing their glasses to see if they have the best prescription for their needs.

There is no need to know ABC’s or numbers to have the SPOT camera do its work. The process is similar to having a photo taken. In about thirty seconds the process is done and a report is given for the parents to review. The report will inform the parents if professional eye care is needed.

In a recent study by the Department of Health and Behavioral studies at Columbia University, early detection and treatment of vision disability needs to be priority number one.

Experts say that roughly 80 percent of what a child learns in school is information that is presented visually. So good vision is essential for students of all ages to reach their full academic potential.

Also, a child with an undetected or untreated vision problem is more likely to develop social or emotional problems and fall behind in academic achievement. A child’s vision problems can affect not only their own learning, but also, that of their peers.

Fifty percent of behavior problems in schools are due to vision issues. Early detection and treatment can lead to a lifetime vision changing experience.

After the 8 there are a number of vision issues which cannot be corrected.

You do not have to attend the Breakfast to have the children’s eye screening.
