Jets down Lady Falcons in EWC clash

Roncalli outscored Falls 27-13 in the second half to move to 2-0 in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference (3-1 overall).

With the loss, the Falcons fell to 1-1 in the EWC (2-3 overall).

The Falcons shot just 22 percent from the field in the game and struggled to score, netting just 13 points in the second half.

With the score knotted 18-18 at halftime, Falls took a small lead 24-22 with baskets by seniors Erika Van Engen, Becky Raeder and Brittny Thackray to start the second half.

Then the Jets went on an 11-0 run to take a 33-24 lead with 10 minutes left in the game led by seven points from Alexandria Cliff and four from Andrea Vaca.

Raeder converted a lay-up for Falls to cut the lead to 33-26.

Vaca made two more field goals to extend the Jets lead to 37-26.

Van Engen swished a 3-pointer and Raeder added two free throws to make the score 37-31 with 5:31 remaining in the game.

The Falcons then went cold and didn’t score for the rest of the game, as Roncalli scored the last eight points.

Falls fell behind early in a low scoring first half with the Jets building a 9-2 lead keyed by five points from Lauren Clark.

Falls sophomore Alyssa Sommerfeld’s jumper and two free throws cut the lead to 10-6. Van Engen and Raeder scored two field goals to make it 13-10 Jets.

Roncalli then pulled away to a 16-10 lead, after a basket from Cliff.

Raeder’s 3-point shot and a free throw cut the lead to 17-16 late in the first half.

Van Engen then made two free throws to tie the game at 18-18 at halftime.

The Falls junior varsity team lost to Roncalli 42-29.

Breanna Hausler scored 14 points to lead the Falcons and Emily Brading added seven points.

The Falcons opened the EWC season by pounding Chilton 49-23 Tuesday, Dec. 1, at Chilton.

Falls dominated the first half, building a 32-10 lead at halftime.

Raeder led the Falcons with 15 points, including three 3-pointers.

Senior Payton Benzschawel scored nine points with one 3-point shot.

Chilton never got within 20 points in the second half as Falls walked away with the win.

Raeder finished with a gamehigh 19 points to go along with three steals.

Sommerfeld added eight points and three rebounds, while Van Engen had six points and five boards.
