Second-half surge propels Panthers to ECC win

WINNECONNE – Plymouth fired on all cylinders in the second half to earn a 74-58 girls basketball win over Winneconne here Thursday night.

PHS, ignited by Gwen Streblow’s 12 points, outscored the Wolves 42-25 in the second half. The Panthers rallied from an 11-point deficit in the first half to pull within 33-32 at halftime.

The Panthers improved their East Central Conference record to 2-1 (4-3 overall). The Wolves dropped to 1-2 in the ECC (3-3 overall).

“It was a good overall team win. Everyone contributed in all facets,” said Panther head coach Brad Shutter.

Winneconne buried six threepointers in the first half but was held to only 1-for-12 shooting from three-point range in the second half.

“In the second half, we identified their [three-point] shooters better and got out on their shooters better,” said Shutter.

“Our transition game was absolutely amazing in the second half. They had trouble keeping up with us.”

The Panthers scored several baskets in transition during the fi- nal half.

Plymouth’s defense forced 23 turnovers, including a season-high 21 steals. Hering led PHS in steals with six, followed by Emily Majerus and Streblow with four each and Lautenschlaeger, three.

Streblow, a junior guard, hit a game-high 18 points. Kalei Hering and Lexi Lautenschlaeger chipped in with 14 and 11, respectively, for PHS. Eight Panthers tallied points.

Hering also grabbed a teamhigh eight rebounds. Morgan Lisowe led the Panthers in assists with two.

“Kalei had a good overall game. Lexi had a good overall game.”

JUNIOR VARSITY GAME

PHS outscored Winneconne 29-20 in the second half to key a 56-46 win and improve its ECC mark to 2-1 (6-1 overall).

Jess Leider sparked the Panthers’ attack with 21 points and Carly Lilek hit 12. Leider also led in rebounds with nine and steals, two.

Hanna Goeser paced PHS in assists with five and Sommer Stoney made three. Stoney and Sam Meyer had seven boards apiece.

“This was a hard-earned win and we played hard,” said Panther head coach Mike Gumm.
