Sheboygan County credited for Excellence in Financial Reporting

The Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting has been awarded to Sheboygan County by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for its comprehensive annual financial report for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2014. The GFOA Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recog- nition in the area of government accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management team.

This award program was established to encourage and assist state and local governments to go above and beyond the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principles and prepare annual financial reports that demonstrate the spirit of transparency and full disclosure. Reports submitted for consideration are reviewed by selected members of the GFOA professional staff and the GFOA Special Review Committee including individuals with expertise in public sector financial reporting such as financial statement preparers, independent auditors, academics, and other finance professionals.

Sheboygan County’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report represents the culmination of all budgeting and accounting activities engaged in by the Sheboygan County management team throughout the year 2014, covering all funds of the County.

County Board Chairman Roger Te Stroete said, “Sheboygan County has a strong management team in place, and I commend the county administrator and Finance Department for their leadership in conducting the financial operations of the county.”

County Administrator Adam Payne heaped the bulk of the praise on the Deputy Finance Director Mary Wegmann for her role in preparing the financial reports and assuring transparency and full disclosure to the citizens of Sheboygan County. “Mary has worked for Sheboygan County for 22 years, and 18 years as the deputy finance director. She is very good at what she does, and retiring this month on a high note. Mary is highly regarded by her co-workers, and she and the entire Finance Department can all take pride in this tremendous accomplishment.”

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada is a nonprofit professional association serving approximately 17,500 government finance professionals with offices located in Chicago and Washington, D.C.

Finance Committee Chairman Greg Weggeman said this is the second consecutive year that Sheboygan County has received this prestigious recognition. “Most counties don’t qualify for a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting. This award is a credit to our staff, management and County Board teamwork, and a culture of continuous improvement.”
