Huge second half carries Tigers past Lancers

MANITOWOC – The Howards Grove Tigers, fueled by their defense, outscored host Manitowoc Lutheran 49-32 in the second half en route to an 85-68 boys basketball win Friday night.

HGHS hiked its Big East Conference record to 4-0 (5-2 overall). The Tigers are in second place in the BEC, one-half game behind Ozaukee (5-0). The Lancers dropped to 0-5 in the league (0-6 overall).

Senior guard/forward Devin Gallenberger sparked the Tigers’ attack in the final half with a 20-point explosion. Gallenberger tallied six in the first half on a pair of three-point goals and finished the night with a team-high 26 points.

“We were able to score 49 points in the second half and I thought it all started with our defensive pressure. We were able to turn them over nine times in the second half and the majority led to layups or getting to the free-throw line,” said Tiger head coach Eric Worth.

“I loved the way the guys competed in the second half. The boys dug in and we were able to really get after Manitowoc Lutheran.”

Derrick Grimm and Bryce Pedrin contributed 14 points each for HGHS.

Senior forward Tanner Krueger poured in 40 points, including 23 in the opening half, to lead the Lancers.

Gallenberger paced the Tigers in rebounding with seven. Caleb Holzman and Grimm were the assist leaders with five and four, respectively. Grimm had a team-high four steals.
