Comm Ed classes begin soon

Several wood, yarn, family and winter courses offered by Plymouth School District Community Education and Recreation will begin in January.

Register early and save $10 on the following classes, which meet at Plymouth High School unless otherwise noted:

Family Fit Gym: One adult and one child ages 5 to 10 will team up and get fit through circuit training, physical education games and relay races. Class will meet with instructor Katie Schuenemann from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Tuesdays from Jan. 12 to March 15; fee is $29 per child/adult pair until Jan. 6, then $39.

Art of Woodcarving: Those ages 15 and up are invited to learn about or expand their knowledge of this art form. Class will meet with instructors Pam Moir and Darrell Abston from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays from Jan. 12 to Feb. 9; fee is $60 ($48 for Generations members and district residents ages 62 and up) until Jan. 6, then $70. Carving knives available for use the first night; after that they will be available from the instructors for $23.

Adult Woodworking: This class is for adults interested in working on wood-related projects of all types. New participants will work closely with instructor Ralph Gunkel to learn the concepts and tools of the trade, while completing personal projects big or small. Returning or experienced participants may use the facilities independently and receive assistance when necessary. Class will meet from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays from Jan. 20 to March 2; fee is $67 (seniors $53) until Jan. 8, plus the cost of materials for projects.

Intro to Crochet: Learn basic techniques and the most common stitches and gain experience reading a pattern, while making a scarf to take home. Class will meet with instructor Sharon Schlundt from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays from Jan. 13 to Feb. 3; fee is $35 (seniors $28) until Jan. 6, plus supplies.

Thrummed Knit Mittens: Thrumming is an old art of using soft unspun merino thrums to line a pair of mittens. Class will meet with instructor Sharon Schlundt from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays Jan. 19 and 26 and Feb. 9; fee is $26 ($20 seniors) until Jan. 8, plus supplies.

Cross Country Ski: Learn the basics of classic-style cross-country skiing from experienced skier and educator Clark Reinke. The first session will be in a classroom setting where participants will learn about the sport, how to choose equipment, and techniques for efficient skiing. They then will have four days of practice on PHS ski trails or the Evergreen Golf Course trail. The group also will spend a session skiing in the Kettle Moraine Forest. Participants can use PHS ski equipment; boot sizes and class space are limited. Class will meet in the board room at PHS from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13 and then ski on Jan. 16, 17 and 31 and Feb. 7; fee is $20 (seniors $16) until Jan. 6, then $30.

Snowshoe Trial: Participants will receive basic instruction at the beginning of class, then can walk around school grounds to test their abilities. Class will meet from noon to 1 p.m. Jan. 16, 17 and 31 and Feb. 7; fee is $10 (seniors $8) until Jan. 6, which includes use of snowshoes in youth and adult sizes.

Online registration - which no longer carries a service charge - is available for these classes, which allows participants to pay with a credit card and to receive immediate confirmation of enrollment.
