Job finder effort will seek to sell county to workers

SOMETIMES A PROBLEM CAN be a good thing – at least from a certain perspective.

That was highlighted last week when the Sheboygan County Economic Development Corp. and the Sheboygan County Chamber of Commerce launched a new workforce attraction website, www.SomeplaceBetter.org.

The launch is in response to the ongoing shortage of workers at all levels across the county.

Sheboygan County has seen 7.3 percent job growth over the past four years – the best growth rate of any county in eastern Wisconsin and nearly double the statewide rate, according to SCEDC Executive Director Dane Checolinski.

That’s great news, because it means our local economy is strong and healthy.

But it’s also a challenge, as there are too often not enough qualified workers here to fill open positions – and because Sheboygan County employers have to overcome a reluctance on the part of many potential workers to relocate to the upper Midwest.

As Sargento Foods CEO Louie Gentine put it at the press conference announcing the new collaborative workforce recruitment effort, “Unfortunately, we live in an area where it’s harder for people to feel like they would be comfortable. (Too often) people stop when the word ‘Wisconsin’ is said.”

That’s what SomeplaceBetter is aiming to overcome.

The website provides a wealth of information about all the things that make Sheboygan County a great place to work, live, play and raise a family.

They’re all things that those of us already here take for granted, but that need to be emphasized to those considering locating in Sheboygan County.

It ranges from top-notch school systems both large and small; unmatched recreational opportunities; arts, cultural and entertainment venues and events; and all of the quality of life attributes that make Sheboygan County great.

The website also provides information about county employers and job openings, housing and community information, and much, much more.

“Sheboygan County offers a better life balance with short commutes; globally-focused companies; world-class recreation; innovative, award-winning schools; and friendly, safe communities. We are truly Someplace Better,” is how Sheboygan County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Betsy Alles put it.

The comprehensive website does a great job of making all those points and more for prospective employees, but it isn’t the only part of the workforce attraction effort.

Checolinski said the marketing effort will also include a complementary print newcomer’s welcome guide and visits by SCEDC staff to job fairs with an emphasis on those areas with higher unemployment rates.

“Sheboygan County has more job opportunities than available workforce – a bonus for anyone looking for employment,” Alles stated.

That means finding workers for open jobs in Sheboygan County is a problem that should translate into a great opportunity for anyone who wants to live, work and raise a family in an unmatched county.
