Falcons soar over Jets in EWC clash

Falls boys hoops team nets wins over Roncalli, West Bend

With the win, Falls moved into second place in the EWC with a 6-2 record (9-4 overall). The loss dropped Roncalli to third in the EWC at 5-3.

The Falcons had four players score in double figures in a game that saw them lead most of the game.

“I thought our defense executed well,” said Falcons’ head coach Jake Frohling. “The offense was slow in the first half. Otherwise, we fought hard and picked up a good team win.”

Both teams traded baskets early with Cody Bahrs hitting some crucial 3-pointers to vault Roncalli to a 14-11 lead.

With 6:41 left in the first half, 6-foot, 7-inch Falls senior center Alex Antonie took advantage of the smaller Jets team to score on a lob pass and later hit a 3-pointer to give the Falcons a 18-14 lead.

Another 3-point shot from senior Ryan Schmitt and two Antonie free throws extended the lead to 23-16.

Two baskets by Justin Polzin and Zach Schneider allowed Roncalli to close the gap to 23-20 at halftime.

The Jets gained a 29-26 lead to start the second half on a Bahrs 3-pointer and two baskets from Chombi Lambert.

Schmitt made another 3-point shot and then Falls went on a 13-2 run to break open a 39-31 lead with 11:29 left in the second half.

Sophomore JT Petrie pounded out five points and Schmitt had seven to lead the way for the Falcons.

A 3-point shot from junior Clark Otte pushed the lead to 42- 33.

Antonie continued to use his size inside with six more points and the Falcons led 48-39 with 5:50 remaining.

Bahrs then nailed his fourth 3-pointer of the game to cut the lead to 50-44 with 4:47 to go.

Petrie took over with four free throws and a steal to extend the lead to 56-44.

Falls senior Austin Madden added a 3-pointer to make the score 59-45 with two minutes left.

The Falcons closed out the win, shooting 8-of-10 from the free throw line.

Antonie led four Falcons in double figures with 16 points. Krist and Schmitt scored 15 points each, while Petrie finished with 13 points for the Falcons.

Tomerot Lambert led Roncalli with 13 points.

Falls used a big first half to top West Bend East 63-53 in nonconference action Tuesday, Jan. 19.

The Falcons outscored East 30- 20 in the first half and maintained the advantage in the second half on the way to the non-conference victory.
