Falls takes third at Raiders Invite

Falcons roll past Vikings in EWC dual meet action

Falls placed 10 wrestlers in the top eight spots and captured four championships in the event.

Sophomore Parker Schamburek (106 pounds), senior Sean Mattek (160), senior Dustin Setzer (195) and senior Brady Koller (220) each won titles for the Falls squad.

Schamburek (25-12 overall) took first place with a 1:14 pin of Klessig Trey of Sheboygan South to finish 4-0.

“I really have been working hard,” sad Schamburek. “It was a good win for me.”

Mattek (25-3) went 4-0 to finish first with a 6-4 decision over Michael Bertrand of Southern Door.

“This was one tourney I haven’t won at,” said Mattek. “I still feel I’m not at the level I need to be for the postseason.”

Setzer (25-7) finished 4-0 with a 4-3 victory over Tory Jandin of Southern Door to take first place.

“It’s a good tournament to win to get me prepared for the postseason,” said Setzer.

Koller (30-2) scored a 3:53 pin over David Nilles of Germantown to finish 4-0 and take first place.

“I’ve always had fun at this tournament,” said. Koller. “I’m going to miss it.”

Setzer and Koller finished as two-time Raider Invite champions.

Senior Ryan McGinnes (22-15) took third with a 3-1 record with two pins at 132 pounds.

Junior Anthony Xiong (20-10) was fourth with a 2-2 record and one pin at 120 pounds.

Sophomore Kaleb Ison (21- 16) went 3-2 with two pins to take sixth at 126 pounds.

Senior Max Post (22-15) and junior Isaiah Richards (9-20) each finished seventh with 3-2 records.

Junior Brandon Hill (11-15) took eighth with a 2-3 record.

“Overall, we did well as a team,” said Falcons’ head coach Brad Knecht. “We had some guys that really wrestled hard that continue to improve like Scamburek, Xiong, Hill, Ison and Richards.”

Falls rallied from a 22-6 deficit to overtake the Valders 35-29 in an EWC dual match Thursday, Jan. 21.

The Falcons improved to 4-1 in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference (12-3 overall) to remain in second place.

Falls scored big wins on four pins from Sean Mattek, junior Vinny Hoderny, Dustin Setzer, and Parker Schamburek, along with a technnical fall by Ryan McGinnes

Brady Koller won by major decision and Xiong also won by a decision.

With the Falcons trailing 12- 0, Mattek pinned Adam Satori in 5:54. Then Falls gained pins from Hoderny and Setzer with a major decision by Koller to tie the match 22-22.

Schamburek pinned Quinton Keller in 3:41 to give the Falcons a 28-26 lead.

Xiong held on to a 4-1 decision to extend the lead to 31-26.

After Valders cut the lead to 31-29, McGinnes scored an 18-3 technical fall victory over Joe Schmidt.

“This was a good Valders team,” remarked Knecht. “They wrestled us well and fought until the end.”
