Heroes all

The Ladewig-Zinkgraf American Legion Post 243 held their annual remembrance ceremony for the Four Chaplains Saturday. The ceremony honors four Army chaplains — George Fox, Alexander Goode, Clark Poling and John Washington — who perished along with nearly 700 others when the Army transport ship Dorchester was sunk in the North Atlantic by a German submarine Feb. 3, 1943. The four chaplains helped men into the ship’s lifeboats, gave their life preservers to other men, then linked arms and, saying prayers and signing hymns, went down with the ship. The ceremony also honored Plymouth native and soldier Virgil DeMunck, who was among those who perished on the Dorchester.
