Resorters drop BEC regular-season finale

FREDONIA – The Elkhart Lake- Glenbeulah Resorters dug themselves a 32-13 halftime deficit which was too much to overcome as they lost, 50-39, to host Ozaukee in a girls basketball game Thursday night.

The game was the Big East Conference regular-season finale for both teams. Elkhart finished 5-8 in the BEC and dropped to 7-11 overall. The Warriors posted a 5-8 league mark and improved to 8-10 overall.

“We had another slow start. We shot poorly in the first half [5-for-29, 17 percent] to Ozaukee’s 48 percent [13-for-27]. We missed many shots from close range,” said Resorter head coach Donny Kulow.

“Defensively, Ozaukee’s post player Emma Richards dominated inside on both ends [in the first half].”

Richards, a sophomore, scored 12 of her 16 points in the opening half. She also had a game-high 16 rebounds.

“We played a much better second half and made a run at them but the hole was too deep to dig out of. Effort was not a problem – we just need to find our confidence,” said Kulow.

Junior guard Sonia Schubert sparked the Elkhart offense with 16 points – 13 in the second half. Camrie Schmitz paced the team in steals with six, followed by Schubert with four. The Resorters had an outstand- ing 17 steals.

Schmitz led Elkhart in rebounds with five.

Elkhart will host Random Lake in a BEC Tournament consolation bracket game Thursday, Feb. 11 at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Elise Large led the Warriors’ attack with 17 points, including 11 in the first half.
