Cougars upset Panthers in conference play

CAMPBELLSPORT – The Campbellsport Cougars’ decisive edge in rebounding and free-throw shooting keyed a 57-48 upset win over the Plymouth Panthers in girls basketball action here Thursday night.

The Cougars outscored PHS 21-7 at the foul line and dominated the boards with a 43-26 rebounding advantage. PHS committed 24 fouls, compared to only 13 by Campbellsport.

The Panthers fell to 9-4 in the East Central Conference (13-7 overall) and had a four-game winning streak snapped. The Cougars improved to 6-7 in the ECC (8-12 overall).

Campbellsport outscored PHS 38-28 in the second half, sparked by senior forward Tiffani Anderson who erupted for 16 of her game-high 20 points. Anderson scored several of her points on rebound baskets as she pounded the offensive glass.

Anderson led all rebounders with an impressive 16. She was 8-for-9 at the free-throw line. Anderson scored only six points in the Cougars’ 58-41 loss to PHS on Jan. 12.

“Rebounding and free throws were the keys. They got to the line a lot [11-for-17] and got a lot of second-chance points in the second half. Anderson had a lot of put-backs and crashed the offensive board,” said PHS head coach Brad Shutter.

“Campbellsport is wellcoached. I give them credit. They played very well. In the second half they took it to us.”

PHS led 20-19 at halftime but should’ve led by more because it missed several layups.

Junior guard Kalei Hering led PHS in scoring with 16. The Panthers had an impressive 19 steals, led by Emily Majerus with five and Gwen Streblow and Jordyn Pieper with four each.

Streblow had a team-high seven rebounds and shared the lead in assists with Lydia Rhude at two each.

JUNIOR VARSITY GAME

Jess Leider tallied 24 points to ignite the PHS JV to a 38-25 win. The Panthers jumped out to a 22- 10 lead and were in command the rest of the way.

Leider also had a team-high eight steals. Sam Meyer led PHS in rebounding with seven. Gabi Mella led in assists with four and had six steals.
