Waldo man arrested for parole violation after explosion

A 42-year-old Waldo man was charged with a parole violation after an explosion at his home Saturday, Feb. 20, led to the discovery of material for making fireworks in the home.

Daniel Shilts Jr. was arrested after the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department responded to a 911 call about a possible explosion at 720 W. Second St., Waldo, about 4:45 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20.

At the scene, according to the Sheriff’s Department report, deputies saw that several front porch windows at the home that were blown out and Shilts cleaning up broken glass. Shilts told the deputies it was the result of a welding accident.

An initial investigation by deputies found materials and unknown chemicals for making explosives and fireworks, at which time Shilts, who was not injured in the blast, was arrested for a parole violation.

Shilts is on parole for a 2008 conviction for possession of improvised explosives and was convicted of bail jumping in 2012 when he was found with large amounts of chemicals for making fireworks.

Lt. Chad Broeren of the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department said the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad was called to the scene Saturday evening after the chemicals were discovered.

The bomb squad requested that the home be secured overnight until they could conduct a daylight investigate Sunday, Feb. 21.

That investigation took place Sunday morning by the bomb squad, assisted by the Waldo Fire Department; Orange Cross Ambulance; agents of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the National Guard 54th Civil Support Team; and Sheboygan County Emergency Management Director Steven Steinhardt.

After an initial search of the home, neighboring residents were temporarily evacuated while the materials were examined and removed, with the assistance of Veolia North America.

Broeren said it is still unknown if Shilts will face further charges as a result of the incident.
