Resorters compete well despite loss in regional debut

MILWAUKEE – Heavy underdog Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah competed well against No. 2-seeded Milwaukee Academy of Science before falling, 56-38, in a Division 5 boys regional basketball first-round game here Tuesday night.

The Resorters, a No. 15 seed, fell behind 13-1 and trailed 36- 18 at halftime but fought back. Elkhart cut the deficit to 52-38 after Caleb Broaddus drilled a threepointer with three minutes left. The Resorters were unable to get any closer the rest of the way.

“MAS is a very talented and athletic team. I think our kids were a bit intimidated at first but we settled in nicely and really played a solid game against one of the premier D-5 schools in Wisconsin,” said Resorter head coach Ray Mlada whose team finished 2-21.

The Novas. 17-5, came into the game ranked No. 11 in the Associated Press D-5 poll.

“They average nearly 80 points per game and love to play uptempo but our defensive transi- tion was outstanding and we ran a patient, disciplined offense that really frustrated them. The key to that [on offense] was Noah Ruh [sophomore guard]. He has really elevated his game,” said Mlada.

“Max [Kossman] and Caleb hit some big threes. In the end we lost this game on the glass. They had 20 offensive rebounds which really hurt.”

Broaddus led Elkhart scorers with 13 points, including three treys. Kossman added 12 points on four three-point goals. Owen Kalbacken led in rebounds with eight.

Monterious Metcalfe led a balanced Nova attack with 14 points.

“Their [Novas’] staff had high praise for our kids and I couldn’t have been prouder of how well they represented EL-G High School and the Big East Conference in a game I think many observers thought was going to be a major blowout. The kids didn’t back down,” said Mlada.
