Second chance for fitness classes

Plymouth School District Community Education and Recreation is offering a second chance to join fitness and aquatic classes this spring.

The following aquatics classes meet with instructor Beth Kerntke in the pool at Plymouth High School, 125 Highland Ave.:

Daytime Aqua Dynamics: This shallow-water class is excellent for flexibility, range of motion and muscle toning. Class meets from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Fridays until April 5 (except March 25); fee is $47 ($37 for Generations members or district residents ages 62 and up) for 12 classes.

Shallow Water Aerobics: This one-hour class starts with half an hour of circuit training - small group stations providing an interesting, fun and well-balanced workout - followed by half an hour of aerobic workout with the instructor. Class meets from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays until March 30; fee is $47 (seniors $37) for 12 classes.

Deep Water Aerobics: This sister class to Shallow Water Aerobics also meets from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays until March 30; fee is $47 (seniors $37) for 12 classes.

The following fitness classes meet through April 28 (except March 21-24) at Riverview Middle School, 300 Riverside Drive, unless otherwise noted:

Balance & Functional Movement: This class is for those looking to improve their balance and will utilize Yoga and fitness principles. It is good for all age and ability levels but especially those struggling with balance. Class will meet with instructor Stuart Gavin from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Plymouth Youth Center next to Riverview; fee is $35 (seniors $28) for 15 classes.

Core Training: This is a great beginner class but also can benefit the most experienced participant. It is good for those looking specifically at core strength or a low-impact course to get started, and uses stability, Bosu and medicine balls plus exercise bands, mats and weights. Class will meet with instructor Josette Svitter from 4:15 to 5 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays; fee is $49 (seniors $39) for 15 classes.

Yoga: Learn basic Yoga poses in this beginner class, a great opportunity to give this healthful activity a try. During this class you will become more relaxed, more flexible and you will breathe more fully. Class will meet with instructor Stuart Gavin from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; fee is $62 (seniors $49) for 15 classes.

Yoga Fusion: This class brings a variety of activities into an hour of sweat and fun. Beginning and ending with Yoga poses, the middle utilizes cardio and toning exercises for the entire body. Class will meet with instructor Stuart Gavin from 7:30 to 8:15 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; fee is $62 (seniors $49) for 15 classes.

Top Flight: Class begins with a warmup and continues into aerobics, designed to strengthen the cardiovascular system. The mat work section of the class will shape and define arm, abdominal, thigh and hip muscles. Class concludes with stretching for flexibility. Class meets with instructor Pat Moriarty from 8 to 9 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays in the Plymouth Youth Center; fee is $62 (seniors $49) for 15 classes.

In addition, the Community Fitness Center is offering orientations at 7:45 p.m. Monday, March 14 and 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 6. Orientations are free, but please register with Community Ed & Rec.

Online registration – which no longer carries a service charge – is available for these classes, which allows participants to pay with a credit card and to receive immediate confirmation of enrollment.
