Mother’s Day gifts prepared for single teen moms

“A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials, heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine, desert us; when troubles thicken around us, she is the one who will still be on our side, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.”- Washington Irving (1783-1859)

Despite the historical impact of mothers, millions of needy, hard-working, single mothers of preschoolers go unrecognized on Mother’s Day; their children are too young to recognize them on this special day.

As a “public expression of love” for these women, Sheboygan Teen Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) and MOPS will once again this year recognize single mothers through a community service project titled Mother’s Day Gift Bags. This project will involve decorating gift bags and filling them with items for hard-working single mothers of preschoolers who might otherwise go unrecognized on Mother’s Day. The boxes will be delivered to Sheboygan County Health and Human Services, Family Resource Center, Safe Harbor, and Teenage Pregnancy Program and reach single mothers and teen mothers just in time for Mothers’ Day 2016. Because of Sheboygan County’s generosity, more than 80 single mothers received Mother’s Day gift bags last year. This year our goal is to create 100 bags.

It is hoped that this project will help many single mothers to feel cared for, special and pampered this coming Mother’s Day.

Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) is calling on Sheboygan County residents and local businesses to help us gather small gift items that can be included in the boxes. We are looking for items such as: hand cream, earrings, notecards, postage stamps, small shampoo, scented candles, candy, gum, mints, tissues, socks, toothbrushes, beauty items, lip balm, nail polish, tea, cocoa, emery boards, soaps, bubble bath, gift certificates, jewelry, inspirational books, one-size slippers, disposable cameras and any other appropriate items. Donations will be accepted until Monday, May 2 and can be dropped off at Calvin Christian Reformed Church, 2313 Saemann Ave., Sheboygan or Christ Community Church, 428 Geele Ave., Sheboygan. If you have any questions, please contact: Andrea DuMez at (920627- 4187.
