Town, SCEDC partner to map growth

The town of Sheboygan has partnered with the Sheboygan County Economic Development Corporation (SCEDC) and The Retail Coach to assist in identifying and reaching out to retailers that can benefit from locations within the Sheboygan market.

The town has recently attracted Sam’s Club and hopes to build upon that success.

Town Chairman Dan Hein said, “Our goal for the town is to develop in an ascetically pleasing and practical way. The town of Sheboygan is one of the few that is situated at an interstate and four-lane state highway interchange, has an existing water and sewer network, can and is willing to create a TIF, has lower property tax rate that surrounding municipalities and has available green fields. We feel that the timing of this study and effort is optimal as we are seeking to grow as a community.”

The Sheboygan MSA has been the second-fastest growing economy in the state of Wisconsin for the last two years and creating over 1,000 jobs year after year adding $40 million in spending potential every year. The town of Sheboygan has benefited with significant residential growth over the past decade and currently has five active single-family residential subdivisions and two upscale multifamily developments underway.

“The Sheboygan market is about an hour directly between the largest and third-largest communities in Wisconsin [Milwaukee and Green Bay]. We have been a strong enough market to attract Festival Foods, Meijer, and Ultra over the past few years. We have had inquiries from other retail and commercial businesses seeking space in our market and we are trying to find them homes,” stated Dane Checolinski, SCEDC director.

The Retail Coach has been hired to determine the retail trade area, identify sales leakage, and create a psychographic profile of the community. This information will be used by all partners to recruit and encourage expansions of retail and commercial development in the town of Sheboygan.
