Waupun wins first state championship

MADISON – The Waupun Warriors hung on to edge Appleton Xavier, 59-58, in the Division 3 boys state basketball championship game Saturday afternoon at UW-Madison’s Kohl Center.

The state title is the first for Waupun which played in its first state tournament since 1927 which was the school’s only other state appearance. The Warriors, who won the East Central Conference crown, finished with a 27-1 record. Plymouth is also a member of the newly formed ECC.

Xavier’s Hunter Plamann had a chance to tie the game after being fouled on a three-point shot with 2.9 seconds left. Plamann made the first two of three foul shots but missed the third. He grabbed the rebound and missed a shot at the buzzer which would have given the Hawks the win.

Freshman guard Marcus Domask led a balanced Warrior attack with 15 points, followed by Owen Theune with 13. Colton Homan pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds., Homan scored 12 points along with Jordan Mc- Ginnis.

Plamann paced the Hawks in scoring with 20. Xavier, which finished 24-4, lost in the 2015 state finals to Brown Deer.

Sheboygan North fell to defending state champion Stevens Point in the D-1 state semifinals, 75-48, on Friday night. Davis Larson was North’s top scorer with 14. Trev Anderson led the Panthers with 23 points.

The Golden Raiders ended their season at 24-3. Stevens Point went on to win the state championship with an 89-64 rout over Muskego Saturday night to finish 28-0.

Whitefish Bay Dominican, which defeated Howards Grove in the sectional finals, earned its fifth straight D-4 state title with a 62-43 win over Cameron Saturday afternoon. It marks the first time in Wisconsin boys basketball history that a school has won five consecutive state championships.

Junior guard Jake Bennett sparked Dominican’s offense with 25 points. Bennett was an incredible 7-for-10 from threepoint range. The loss was the first for Cameron this season as it finished 26-1. Dominican chalked up a 27-1 mark.
