Hazardous waste collection set

The Sheboygan County Planning and Conservation Department will hold a household hazardous waste collection event Saturday, April 2, from 8-11 a.m. at Maywood Environmental Park, 3615 Mueller Rd., Sheboygan.

The majority of the program is funded with county tax dollars and those dropping off items for collection should be prepared to show proof of residency.

Due to an unexpected increase in the cost of accepting electronics at the collections, the fees have changed to:

. $10 for vehicles with only hazardous waste.

. $25 for vehicles with only electronics.

. $25 for vehicles with both hazardous waste and electronics.

Materials that will be accepted at the collection event include flammable liquids, oil-based paints, solvents, varnishes, thinners, fluorescent bulbs (household quantities), household batteries, acids and bases, old gasoline, pesticides and herbicides, cleaners, aerosols, poisons, antifreeze, reactives (typically pool chemicals) and most electronics. For a detailed list, go to www.sheboygancounty.com and navigate to the Planning and Conservation Department page.

Materials that will not be accepted include latex paint, waste oil, radioactive materials, explosives, medical wastes, waste medication, pressurized cylinders, large appliances and tires.

Waste oil is recycled at many sites in conjunction with community recycling programs. See the Planning and Conservation Department webpage for more information.

Latex paint is not hazardous waste. It can be disposed of with regular garbage once dried.

Waste pharmaceuticals can be recycled in the lobbies of the Sheboygan, Kohler, Sheboygan Falls, Plymouth and Elkhart Lake police departments. Each department has an anonymous drop box for recycling.

Never leave hazardous waste at any location or before the collection date and time. Abandoning hazardous wastes, even from households, is a state and federal offense.
