PHS grad places in Big Ten track meet

Haley Johnson, a 2012 Plymouth High School graduate, placed in two events for the University of Minnesota at the recent Big Ten Conference Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championship meet, hosted by Ohio State University.

Johnson, a redshirt junior, finished sixth in the mile with a time of 4 minutes, 47.13 seconds. She was a member of the Gophers’ distance medley relay which placed third in 11:13.28.

Minnesota placed fourth in the meet with 89 points. Michigan won the title with 109.

Johnson is also a member of the Gophers’ cross country team. She earned All-Midwest Region honors last season with a 13th-place finish in the regional, helping Minnesota earn its 11th straight berth in the NCAA Division I national meet.

In cross country last fall, Johnson was a co-winner of the Gophers’ Tough as Nails Award. This award is given annually to the runners who “even on a bad day, are going to give you everything they’ve got,” according to Gopher head coach Sarah Hopkins.
