Staehling leads PHS boys to second

Staehling placed first. — Photo by Tyler Luedtke MANITOWOC – Senior Samuel Staehling won two events and placed second in another to spark the Plymouth Panthers to a runner-up finish in Tuesday’s Manitowoc Invitational boys indoor track meet Tuesday.

Staehling earned first in the 55-meter dash in 6.67 seconds and the high jump at 5-10. He placed second in the 200 dash behind teammate Jake Schneider, with Staehling sprinting a 24.36 and Schneider, 24.33.

Staehling was named the Most Valuable Player in the meet. He also ran in the winning 640 relay which was clocked in 1 minute, 17.80 seconds. The other relay members were Derek Novotny, Cody Kuhn and Schneider.

Luxemburg-Casco won the 10-team meet with 138 points, followed by PHS with 116. Sheboygan Falls took fourth with 73.

Plymouth’s other winner was Jordan Marshall in the 400 race in 56.57. The Panthers had two other second-place finishers – 1,600 relay in 3:54.55 and Kuhn in the long jump with 19-10½. The relay unit included Mason Guell, Zach Albers, Corby Gafney and Jordan Marshall.

The Panthers’ other place-winners included: Schneider, fourth in the 55 dash in 6.87; Guell, fourth, 800, 2:15.04; Gafney, third, 1,600, 4:52.54; Albers, third, 55 high hurdles, 8.64; 800 relay, sixth, 2:13.48; Kyle Birenbaum, fourth, shot put, 43-2; Max Schermacher, fourth and Jaxsen Schermacher, eighth in the pole vault with 12-0 and 9-6, respectively; and Novotny, third in the long jump at 19-4¾. The 800 relay included Max Schermacher, Jack Benedict, Jaxsen Schermacher and Nick Freund.

“Our boys put together a very nice final indoor meet. Our sprinters really shined with Samuel and Jake dominating the 55 and 200 and the two relays [640 and 800] both placing well,” said PHS head coach Jay Grosshuesch.

“We also did real well in the field events with Derek, Gavin, Samuel and Max all jumping real well. Kyle also had a strong meet.

“Jordan, Mason and Corby did a nice job for us in the distance and mid-distance events. Also, Zach continues to run well in the hurdles. It was nice to get quality performances from a variety of events and a variety of athletes,” said Grosshuesch.
