Child art scholarship offered

The John Michael Kohler Arts Center Preschool in downtown Sheboygan is accepting applications for the Addison Emilie Nye scholarship. The scholarship was established to extend Addison’s (June 2011–September 2015) joyous spirit and loving nature to other children. Addison was a student at the Arts Center Preschool during the 2014/2015 school year.

The Addison Nye scholarship will be awarded to a 3-year-old child attending the Red Class, which meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 11:15 a.m.

Scholarship applications are available by contacting Keely Phippen at or stopping at the Arts Center’s Atrium Reception Desk. Classroom tours are available by appointment. Application deadline is May 15. The scholarship award is based on need.

The arts-based curriculum and child-centered environment offers a diverse early learning experience that includes access to the Arts Center’s galleries; nationally known visual artists; and musicians, actors, and dancers from our own community and around the globe. The state licensed and certified program provides a foundation for language, literacy, math, science, cultural awareness, and creativity, and focuses on critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

In 1961, deputies from the Elkhart Lake Police Dept. were appointed to work Road America race weekends. It was during this time that riots broke out in the streets of Elkhart Lake. Frequently the police would call upon the fire department to assist with crowd control utilizing fire department water trucks to “cool the people down.”
