Resorters’ attack silenced in first loss

ELKHART LAKE – Alyssa Ahumada cooled off the Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Resorters’ hot bats as she fired a three-hit shutout, 3-0, for the Mishicot Indians in softball action Thursday afternoon at June Vollrath Park.

The loss was the first of the season for the Resorters who dropped to 5-1 in the Big East Conference (6-1 overall). The Indians improved to 5-0 in the BEC (5-1 overall).

Ahumada, a junior, walked none and chalked up nine strikeouts.

“She had a rise ball, changeup and a drop ball. She mixed it up and kept us off balance,” said Resorter head coach Brian Feldmann.

“In the first inning we had a couple of mental mistakes on defense and Holly Zorn had trouble with her control.”

Mishicot scored three runs in the top of the first inning on RBI singles by Teha Nguyen, Katie Koeppel and Emily Mowrer. The Indians combined four singles and two walks in the frame.

Elkhart advanced a runner to third on three occasions but was unable to get a clutch hit.

The only hits for the Resorters were two singles by leadoff batter Sonia Schubert and a double by Maddie Schneider.

Zorn took the loss and gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits with five walks and two strikeouts in five innings. Megan Waage pitched the final two frames and allowed no runs on two hits with no walks and zero strikeouts.

Hailey LeClair, Koeppel and Mowrer led the Indians at the plate with two hits each.

“Our defense was awesome [after the first inning]. We made some great plays which kept us in the game,” said Feldmann.

“Holly settled down [pitching] after the first inning. Megan Waage pitched awesome. She pitched strikes and left it up to the defense.”
