Resorters bounce back with twinbill sweep

ELKHART LAKE – The Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Resorters rebounded strong after a disappointing loss to Howards Grove Thursday with a doubleheader sweep against visiting Cedar Grove-Belgium in Big East Conference softball action Friday.

Elkhart won the opener, 11-5, and took the nightcap, 8-2. The Resorters upped their BEC record to 10-2 (11-2 overall). The Rockets fell to 4-7 in the league (4-8 overall).

The Resorters were third in the league race going into this week, with Random Lake in first at 9-0 and Mishicot second at 8-0. The Resorters will host Random Lake in a doubleheader Friday, starting at 4 p.m.

Elkhart banged out 12 hits in the opener, led by Sonia Schubert, Claire Feldmann, Emma Feldmann and Aryka Klemme with two each. Schubert slugged a two-run homer in the bottom of the second inning.

Klemme paced the Resorters in RBIs with four and Schubert had two.

Holly Zorn went the distance and notched the win. Zorn allowed three earned runs on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

The losing hurler was Adrianna Thiele who pitched a complete game and surrendered 10 earned runs and four walks to go with five strikeouts.

Brittany Simmelink led the Rockets’ attack with two hits. Morgan Green had a team-high two RBIs.

GAME TWO

In the second game, the Resorters erupted for five runs in the top of the fourth which gave them a 6-2 lead. The key hit in the frame was Claire Feldmann’s two-run double.

Claire and Emma Feldmann led Elkhart in hits with two each. Claire Feldmann had a team-best two RBIs. Schubert belted her teamhigh fifth homer of the season, a solo blast, in the sixth.

Megan Waage earned the win with five scoreless innings in relief of starter Zorn. Waage gave up five hits and no walks while striking out two.

“This [sweep] was a good bounce-back for us after Thursday’s game. It was a good team effort,” said Resorter head coach Brian Feldmann.

“We had solid defense, hitting and pitching [in the twinbill]. Holly mixed her pitches well and kept them off balance. Megan’s off-speed pitches kept them off balance. I was very happy with Megan’s control.”
