SFMS band to debut new song

Pictured with Cole are several members of the SFMS eighth-grade band, who contributed melodies to the commissioned piece. - Submitted photo The Sheboygan Falls Middle School Instrumental Music Department will present its annual spring concert complete with a premier of a new work for a young band on Monday, May 16 at at 7 p.m.. in the Sheboygan Falls High School auditorium.

Featured performing groups include the sixth, seventh and eighth-grade bands, as well as the middle school jazz ensemble.

The sixth-grade band will open the program with Timothy Loest’s “March of the Champions” and a Michael Sweeney arrangement of “Theme from Jurassic Park” by John Williams.

The seventh-grade band will continue the performance with “Midnight Madness” by Brian Balmages, “A Song for Friends” by Larry Daehn, and Pierre La Plante’s “All Ye Young Sailors.”

The middle school jazz ensemble will perform “Shut Up and Dance ” arranged by John Berry and a Paul Murtha arrangement of “Humanism” by Jonathon Baptiste. Many students will be featured on improvised solos.

The eighth-grade band will close the performance with Johnnie Vinson’ “The Crown of Castile,” “A Shaker Gift Song” by Frank Ticheli, Timothy Broege’s “The Headless Horseman” and the premier performance of “Analog Dreams of an 8-bit World” by Andrew Seager Cole.

“‘Analog Dreams of an 8-bit World’ is the culmination of our second Mission to Commission project, an educational opportunity for yearlong creativity, communication and collaboration for two middle school band programs as students began writing their own music,” Sheboygan Falls Middle School Band Director Carrie Winkler said. “It was also an effort to secure world class composer, Andrew Seager Cole, to work directly with young band students from Sheboygan Falls Middle School and CS Porter Middle School in Missoula, Montana.”

“The Sheboygan Falls Middle School eighth-grade band would like to thank the Kohler Foundation for their generous financial support of our Mission to Commission project,” Winkler said. “We would also like to thank the Sheboygan Falls School District Board of Education, administration, faculty and staff for their encouragement and support throughout the entire project.”

The Sheboygan Falls Middle School ensembles are under the direction of Carrie Winkler and Kevin Dolfin, student teacher.

The performance is open to the public free of charge.
