Utilities hosts electronics recycling

In an effort to help local residents and businesses to recycle electronic devices, light bulbs, ballasts and small appliances, Plymouth Utilities is hosting a recycling event from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, at the Plymouth City Garage, 1004 Valley Rd.

Items accepted for free include: computer CPUs, printers, servers, network equipment, copiers, paper shredders, typewriters, telephone systems, cell phones, computer mice, keyboards, fax machines, VCR and DVD players, radios and stereo equipment, non-PCB ballasts, rechargeable batteries, microwave ovens, dehumidifiers, portable room air conditioners and dorm-size refrigerators.

A fee of $15 will be charged for tube-type television sets and $10 for CRT computer monitors. A small fee will be required to recycle items such as light bulbs (incandescent, compact fluorescent, fluorescent tubes, H.I.D., etc.), PCB contaminated ballasts and alkaline batteries.

Contact Plymouth Utilities at (920) 893-1471 or visit plymouthutilities.com for a complete list of accepted items and pricing.

Electronics are the fastest-growing segment of the municipal solid waste stream and may contain hazardous materials including lead, chromium and mercury. Certain items – including TVs, computers and cell phones – are banned from Wisconsin landfills under a 2009 law.

Keeping electronics out of landfills reduces negative impacts to both environmental and human health. In addition, certain materials can be recovered for use in manufacturing new products.

“It takes energy to mine the resources and to manufacture the materials that go into electronics and appliances, including metals, plastics and glass. Recycling these items protects the environment and helps conserve resources,” said Frank Barth, energy services representative at Plymouth Utilities.
