Resorters’ Zorn throws shutout in key game

MISHICOT – Junior Holly Zorn of Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah twirled a three-hitter in blanking Mishicot, 7-0, in a crucial Big East Conference softball game here Thursday afternoon.

The Resorters improved to 13-3 in the BEC (15-3 overall). Random Lake leads the league with a 14-1 record, followed by Mishicot at 13-2 and Elkhart.

Zorn walked only two and had zero strikeouts.

“This was a key win. Holly was spot-on. She buckled down and changed speeds and hit the corners. She kept them off balance,” said Resorter head coach Brian Feldmann.

“We played excellent defense.”

Elkhart avenged a 4-0 loss to the Indians (16-3 overall) on April 21 in which junior Alyssa Ahumada fired a three-hit shutout and had nine strikeouts and no walks.

The Resorters hit Ahumada hard in Thursday’s rematch. Elkhart pounded out 11 hits, including a leadoff home run by junior shortstop Sonia Schubert over the left-field fence. Raechel Grunewald contributed an RBI single in the top of the first inning which gave Elkhart a 2-0 lead.

Grunewald, Schubert, Claire Feldmann and Emma Feldmann led the Resorters in hits with two each. Schubert and Aryka Klemme had a team-high two RBIs apiece.

“We were disciplined at the plate. We sat on her change-up and laid off the high ball. It was a great hitting performance,” said coach Feldmann.

“Sonia’s leadoff home run was a bomb. It was a tone-setter and gave us a big lift.”

Ahumada allowed five earned runs and two walks while striking out seven in going the distance.
