Tigers keep on rolling in conference play

Brittany Schaller (11) of HGHS and an unidentified Lutheran player look on. – Photo by Terry Schaller Katie Guse and Kaitlynn Near kicked two goals each to propel the Howards Grove Tigers to a 9-0 drubbing of visiting Sheboygan Lutheran in a girls soccer match at HGHS Tuesday afternoon.

The Tigers raised their firstplace Big East Conference record to 12-0-1 (13-2-1 overall). HGHS busted the match open with six goals in the second half.

HGHS dominated on the attack – holding a 27-4 advantage in shots on goal.

Five players scored one goal each – Makenzie Schlafke, Kate Bruckschen, Kayla Bender, Kayla Gilligan and Kennedy Theobald. Bruckschen, Brittany Schaller, Guse, Rayven Kalmerton, Near, Bender and Gilligan had one assist each.

Tiger goalies Olivia Stauss and Sara Marten made two saves each. Crusader goalkeeper Naomi Gruben had 18 saves.

HG-KOHLER MATCH

In BEC play Friday afternoon, the Tigers defeated host Kohler, 3-0. HGHS scored all three goals in the second half – one each by Bender, Morgan Wittman and Caitlin Schmid in the final 22 minutes.

Melissa Oxtoby, Bender and Schaller contributed one assist each.

The Tigers led 13-7 in shots on goal. Stauss made seven saves.

“Once again the girls kept their composure and were forced to wait until late in the game to find the net,” said Smith.

“Freshman Kayla Bender stepped up big-time by hitting a shot from deep on the left side to the upper-right corner well out of the reach of the Kohler keeper.

“I was thrilled with our younger players this evening. Of course, our veterans also played well tonight,” said the coach.
