St. Mary’s Catholic Church was incorporated as a congregation in May 27, 1896, with the cornerstone laid on Aug. 30, 1896 and the first Mass held on Jan. 1, 1897.

With a rapidly growing membership in the early 1960s, the congregation of St. Mary’s Church, as it was known at the time, began to plan for a new church to be located adjacent to the existing church building.

After opening in 1897 with a capacity for 175 people, or 25-30 families, the first church was enlarged in 1920 to seat 350 people.

With the congregation numbering in excess of 500 families by 1965, a new church was a necessity that could no longer wait.

Ground was broken for the new church on Sept. 19, 1965. The last Mass at the old church took place on Nov. 7, 1966.

After having Mass in the basement of the new church for several weeks, the first official Mass in the new church was held on Christmas Day Dec. 25, 1966.

The laying of the new church cornerstone and dedication service took place on April 16, 1967.

The church has undergone a few renovation projects over the years to keep up with needed maintenance and accommodate additional membership, but it has remained in largely the same configuration as it was when it first opened 50 years ago.
