PHS loses, falls into tie for ECC lead

PLYMOUTH – The Plymouth Panthers lost sole possession of first place in the East Central Conference girls soccer race with a 3-2 loss to Winneconne here Thursday afternoon.

PHS slipped to 9-2-1 in the ECC (10-6-1 overall). Kettle Moraine Lutheran (Jackson) moved into a tie for first with a 3-0 win over Campbellsport Thursday which upped the Chargers’ record to 9-2-1.

Campbellsport is in third with an 8-2-2 mark, followed by Winneconne at 8-3-1. The top-four teams each have two ECC games left.

Sophomore midfielder Leah Kubasta scored the winning goal for Winneconne with 6:11 left which snapped a 2-2 deadlock.

PHS led 2-1 at halftime on goals by Ellie Welsch and Emily Majerus at the 23:16 and 58:35 marks, respectfully. Kalei Hering assisted on Majerus’s goal.

Kubasta scored 32:16 into the match which tied it at 1-1.

The Wolves (12-6-1 overall) pulled even, 2-2, on a goal by Taylor

Frierdich at the 48:43 mark.

“We played two separate halves – an excellent first half and an average second half,” said PHS head coach Brad Feick.

“We possessed well in the first half, saw open runs, moved to the ball and pressured fairly well. The second half was completely different. We didn’t execute.”

PHS led 12-9 in shots on goal. Panther goalie Taylor Heyrman made six saves and Winneconne goalkeeper Erika Cropp had 10.

“In the first half, we got numbers up and nearly scored twice with the ball bouncing around on Winneconne’s goal line but we couldn’t finish the plays,” Feick pointed out.

“Skyler Gosse drilled the crossbar from about 30 yards out and Ellie Welsch with composure received the rebound at the top of the 18 [yards], settled it and placed it in the left side. An overall great goal.

“We dropped a goal with miscommunication in the midfield but we got it back when Emily Majerus controlled Hering’s pass and placed it over the keeper. Another great goal.

“The first half was really good. We just didn’t convert the opportunities that we had. And there were so many great chances,” said the coach.
