Flames stay red-hot with league rout

PLYMOUTH – Zac Cain pitched six strong innings and Greg Rhude had three RBIs to lead the Plymouth Flames to an 11-1 rout over Grafton Sunday afternoon in Rock River Baseball League action at Carl Loebe Field.

The Flames hiked their firstplace Northeast Division record to 4-0 (6-0 overall). The Express dropped to 0-3 in the division.

Cain allowed one unearned run on only four hits with six strikeouts and just one walk en route to the win. Jake Klemme finished up with a scoreless seventh – giving up no hits and walks with zero strikeouts. The game was stopped after seven frames due to the 10- run rule.

The Flames pounded out 13 hits, led by Cain and Clay Henning with three each. Greg Rhude and Tyler Willeford added two hits apiece. Plymouth had 11 hits in the sixth and seventh combined.

Plymouth busted the game open with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Flames cracked seven hits and were helped by two Express errors. Henning, Klemme, Greg Rhude and Matt Rhude had one RBI single each in the frame.

“The Grafton game was a big league win for us,” said Flame manager Rick Meyer.

“The Express picked up Port Washington’s ace in pitcher Aaron Brockman. We had a little trouble figuring him out early. However, we finally put it all together with a bust-out inning in the sixth.

“Clay Henning and Zac Cain really hit the ball well with three hits each. They both hit the ball hard all day.

“We got very good pitching again with Zac going six strong innings. He looked comfortable and continued our trend of throwing strikes. Jake also continued the positive work with a scoreless seventh,” said Meyer.

Matt Rhude stole a team-high four bases for Plymouth and Henning had two. Cain, Matt Rhude, Greg Krahn and Willeford led in runs with two each.

The losing pitcher was Brockman who went the distance and gave up six earned runs and three walks while striking out seven in 6-2/3 innings.
