111 area employers in LTC apprentice training

Monday, May 23, Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Assistant Deputy Secretary Dave Anderson delivered the keynote speech at the Lakeshore Technical College (LTC) Apprenticeship Completion Banquet in Kiel. The remarks highlighted the importance of the Registered Apprenticeship program in Wisconsin to both apprentices and employers.

“In Wisconsin, Registered Apprenticeship is a proven solution to address the state's workforce needs, helping working families and employers and advancing our economy,” Assistant Deputy Secretary Anderson said. “Wisconsin's economy is expanding, growing stronger, and adding jobs due in large part to strategic investments in programs like Apprenticeship.”

The Lakeshore Technical College Area of Manitowoc and Sheboygan counties has a total of 111 employers who are training 323 apprentices. Yesterday's ceremony celebrated 68 of these Apprentices who successfully completed their respective programs.

The DWD has taken steps to modernize and reinforce the state's Registered Apprenticeship program as a national model. In April 2015, DWD presented the 2015 Wisconsin Apprenticeship Summit action plan, which culminated the work of state, national and international experts who convened in January 2015 at a summit that was facilitated by the National Governors Association (NGA) to focus on apprenticeship strategies and recommendations.

Last September, DWD was awarded a $5 million grant by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) for the Wisconsin Apprenticeship Growth and Enhancement Strategies (WAGE$) project. Under the WAGE$ initiative, DWD's Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards (BAS) will register new apprenticeships in 12 high-growth occupations in the Advanced Manufacturing, HealthCare, and IT industries, and the project will expand upon other existing programs.
