Resorters win first regional championship

KIEL – The Elkhart Lake- Glenbeulah Resorters continued their late-season surge Saturday afternoon with a 5-2 upset win over No. 2-seeded Kiel in a Division 4 girls regional soccer title match.

The regional championship is the first in the eight-year history of the Elkhart varsity girls soccer program. The No. 6-seeded Resorters, 6-15, advance to the sectional semifinals Thursday at No. 1-seeded Manitowoc Roncalli at 5 p.m.

The Resorters, who have had to battle injuries most of the season, stretched their winning streak to three.

“Everyone is playing with a purpose and everyone is playing as a team. They are trusting each other and playing their position and not trying to do more than they should or need,” said Resorter head coach Kevin Ruh.

“I am so proud of this team and how they hung together in the middle of the season. They continued to talk and keep a positive attitude.”

Junior forward Camrie Schmitz continued her outstanding season Saturday for Elkhart as she exploded for four goals. Monica Ruh scored the Resorters’ other goal. Paige Nelson had an assist.

Scoring for the Raiders (7-8- 3) were Haleigh Stephany and Brenna Baemmert. Stephany also had an assist.

Elkhart led 16-5 in shots on goal. Resorter goalie Taylor Porter made six saves.

“Through the season we had a lot of injuries. There were games this season where we fielded 11 girls, having nine that were truly able to play,” coach Ruh pointed out.

“Midway through the season after coming off seven games in two weeks the girls were beat up. We sent a group chat out after mdway in the season after a terrible performance and it simply stated, ‘Keep your heads up! We can still win regional, we have a lot of injuries right now. Trust me and what we are working on in practice and we will win!’

“I do also want to mention the support we had from the parents and fans. The community showed their support and the girls wanted to let them know that they really appreciated it,” added coach Ruh.
