Tigers hang on to topple Rockets

CEDAR GROVE – The Howards Grove Tigers staved off a late comeback by Cedar Grove-Belgium to earn a 9-7 win in Big East Conference baseball action here Monday evening.

The Tigers raised their BEC record to 5-7 (5-7 overall). The Rockets dropped to 4-8 in the league (4- 10 overall).

HG led 9-3 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. The Rockets scored four runs in the seventh, led by Cameron Kirst’s RBI double. The Rockets stranded runners on second and third bases to end the game.

The Tigers banged out 14 hits, led by Zac Stauss and Matthew Bagnall with three each. Nic Koenig and Brad Olson contributed two each.

Stauss and Olson paced HG in RBIs with two apiece. Eric Reinemann scored a team-high three runs.

Brett Simmelink led the Rockets’ bats with three hits, followed by Kirst, Jason Von Heimburg and Owen Godejohn with two each. Godejohn had a team-high two RBIs.

The winning pitcher was starter Nic Koenig who allowed three runs (all earned) on six hits with three walks, a hit batter and four strikeouts in five innings. Olson picked up a save after pitching the final two frames.

Ryan Post was the losing hurler. Post went the distance and surrendered five earned runs on 14 hits with one walk, a hit batter and five strikeouts.

“Everyone on our team saw ac- tion and contributed,” said Tiger head coach Mark Weber.

“Nic was able to throw strikes – locating pitches and changing speeds.”
