SOWI honors officers

Law enforcement officers from across the state were invited to the 2016 State Summer Games in Stevens Point to cheer on SOWI athletes and be recognized for their achievements from the past year.

At the 2016 Law Enforcement Torch Run Celebration, Special Olympics Wisconsin welcomed five inductees to the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Torch RunĀ® Dale Brunner Hall of Fame.

The inductees included: retired Officer Dean Wendlandt of Sheboygan, Officer Sara Knapp, retired Correctional Officer Richard Dressler, Officer and Special Olympics Wisconsin employee Matt Harper and honorary inductee, Timothy Shriver.

The mission of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Wisconsin is to raise funds and awareness for the Special Olympics movement. Year-round, law enforcement officers help plan, organize and run Special Olympics Wisconsin events throughout the state.

The first inductee was retired Officer Dean Wendlandt, of the Sheboygan Police Department. Officer Wendlandt pioneered the LETR movement for the Sheboygan Police Department.

Since 1988, he has worked to increase the reach of the LETR, while also volunteering his time as a coach for the Sheboygan County Adult Swim Team.
