Strong pitching keys Panthers’ BEC sweep

OOSTBURG – Outstanding pitching propelled the Plymouth Panthers to a sweep of a baseball twinbill against Oostburg here Friday.

Junior Jake Steinhardt twirled a four-hit shutout, 6-0, in the opener. In the nightcap, freshman Jack Nytes earned a completegame victory, 5-2. The Panthers stretched their winning streak to four.

The Panthers hiked their Big East Conference record to 11-2 (13-7 overall) which is tied for second with Kiel. New Holstein leads the BEC at 12-2 going into this week.

Oostburg fell to 6-9 in the league (6-11 overall).

Steinhardt walked five and struck out three. His two-run homer gave PHS a 2-0 lead in the top of the first in game one.

Austin Struve and Holden Reilly led PHS in hits with two each. Steinhardt and Reilly had a teamhigh two RBIs each. Steinhardt led in runs with two.

“Getting out to the early lead in game one was key. Austin’s single, followed by Jake’s home run to start the game gave us a huge confidence boost,” said PHS head coach Butch Cain.

“Our defense along with a fourhit pitching performance by Jake and strong plate discipline allowed us to have success.”

GAME TWO

Nytes allowed two earned runs on six hits with no walks and six strikeouts.

“Jack Nytes earned his first varsity win in his first varsity start while going right at the Oostburg hitters. His focus was tremendous for us,” said Cain.

“We attacked enough on offense to score some runs and our defense was comfortable making every play behind Jack who worked efficiently throughout.”

Taylor Struve keyed the Panthers’ bats with three hits and Derek Schweiger had two. Isaac Fintak, Will Birkholz, Steinhardt and Schweiger contributed one RBI each.

“Good things continue to happen for us when our pitchers make the opposition put the ball in play.,” said the coach.

“Our offense is working at becoming more consistent, keeping our strikeouts down and pressuring the opposition. Our execution is continuing to evolve.
