Flames cruise, stay atop division race

RUBICON – A 17-hit attack and Zac Cain’s strong pitching performance fueled the Plymouth Flames’ 11-1 drubbing of the Rubicon Red Sox here Sunday afternoon.

The Flames raised their firstplace record in the Rock River Baseball League Northeast Division to 8-2 (14-5 overall). Rubicon fell to 5-7 in the Northwest Division.

Cain earned the win as he allowed one earned run on seven hits with two strikeouts, a hit batter and only one walk in eight innings.

Cain, Greg Krahn and Jake Klemme led Plymouth in hits with three each and Austin Mork had a team-high three RBIs. Greg Rhude contributed a two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning which gave the Flames a 4-0 lead.

Rhude, Dusty Medved and Mork cracked two hits each for the Flames. Rhude, Matt Olig and Medved had two RBIs apiece.

“We played very well. It was a real good effort up and down the lineup,” said Flame manager Rick Meyer.

“Zac threw very well. He made them put the ball in play and let the defense work behind him.”

The Flames’ defense played errorless.

Chris Rowaldt led the Red Sox in hits with three and Tanner Smith had two.

The losing hurler was starter Kam Koplitz who allowed six runs (all earned) on 10 hits with two walks, six strikeouts and one hit batter in five innings.
