To the Editor,

We just celebrated the freedoms we enjoy on the 4th of July. With freedoms come responsibilities. Now is NOT the time to be a victim of disenfranchisement or disenchantment!

People say they may not vote this year because they are not happy with the choice of candidates. But remember, “Bad politicians are sent to Washington by good people who don’t vote.” (William E. Simon, 63rd U.S. Secretary of Treasury, Philanthropist) Presidential Medal of Freedom winner, Walter H. Judd noted, “People often say, in a democracy, decisions are made by a majority of the people. Of course, that is not true. Decisions are made by a majority of those who make themselves heard and who vote—a very different thing.”

Get ready for the August and November elections. Rise up against all of the obstacles and suppression tactics. Register to vote and/or assist friends and family members who may need help in securing the proper documents. Use resources like and http:// photo-id for help with the proper documentation needed for registration. The time to act is NOW!

Wisconsinites are fortunate to be able to register to vote at their polling place on election day. Same day voter registration makes the electorate more representative of the whole citizen- ry while increasing voter turnout. Voters need to be informed and prepared so that they do not lose their opportunity to vote by having the wrong documentation with them.

Be concerned that efforts will again be made to eliminate same day voter registration. That will increase provisional ballots being cast which can cause delays in reporting results and increase the chances of votes not being counted because of technical errors.

Some politicians believe a high turnout is a “problem” that needs fixing! Instead, let's ALL vote and show them it makes for a healthier democracy!
