Pedestrian dies in hit and run

A 23-year-old Sheboygan Falls man suffered fatal injuries in a pedestrian van accident on Sunday, July 3, in the town of Rhine.

On Sunday July 3 at 4:36 a.m., the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center received a 911 call advising of a vehicle that had struck a pedestrian on County P just north of County A in the town of Rhine.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a van driven by Brian D. Hartwig, 49, of New Holstein was southbound on County Road P when it struck a pedestrian.

The van operator remained at the scene and called law enforcement. The pedestrian, Shawn M. Kaufert, 23, of Sheboygan Falls was pronounced dead at the scene.

After further investigation, it was revealed on Monday, July 11 that Kaufert was already deceased when he was struck by the van.

The autopsy found that Kaufert had been previously struck and killed by an unidentified vehicle, which left the scene after striking him.

The Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department is still investigating the accident and is seeking witnesses for information that may help identify the suspect vehicle.

Anyone having any information is asked to contact Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department Captain Cory Roeseler at 920-459-3123.
