Flames clinch playoff berth in Rock River League

Wachter earned a 5-1 win. – Photo by Janeen Cain Ryan Wachter’s strong pitching keyed the Plymouth Flames’ 5-1 win over the host Slinger Stingers in Rock River Baseball League action Sunday afternoon.

The victory clinched a playoff berth for the Flames who upped their first-place Northeast Division record to 13-4 (21-11 overall). Slinger fell to 2-15 in the Northwest Division.

Wachter started on the mound and pitched 7-1/3 scoreless innings before exiting in the bottom of the eighth. He surrendered only four hits and two walks while striking out six.

“Ryan threw real well. He threw strikes and got ahead of the batters. He mixed his pitches up [fastball and off-speed],” said Flame manager Rick Meyer.

“We had a good overall performance and got everyone in.”

The Flames bounced back after a tough divisional loss to the visiting Cedarburg Mercs Friday night, 6-5. The game report will be in Thursday’s Review.

Greg Rhude earned a save. Rhude gave up one unearned run on one hit with no walks and one strikeout in 1-2/3 innings.

Plymouth banged out 13 hits, led by Greg Rhude, Clay Henning, Matt Rhude, Greg Krahn and Eric Heidenreiter with two each. Greg Rhude slugged a solo home run in the ninth.

Greg Rhude had a team-high two RBIs. Matt Rhude led in runs with a pair.

RUBICON GAME

In a makeup Tri-County League game Tuesday night, the host Flames defeated the Rubicon Red Sox, 6-2. The game was seven innings in length instead of the normal nine. Plymouth finished 4-1 in the league.

Nick Wilson notched a complete game win. Wilson allowed two earned runs on eight hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

Jake Klemme had a team-best two RBIs.

Plymouth scored four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-1 lead. Luke Held ripped an RBI double and Klemme drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Klemme reached base when the right fielder dropped Klemme’s fly ball which led to two unearned runs.

The Flames will play at the West Bend 7-UP Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the first round of the Tri-County playoffs.
