Flames fall to late rally in Tri-County finals

WATERTOWN – Clyman scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the Plymouth Flames, 4-2, in the Tri- County Baseball League championship game here Wednesday night.

The Canners trailed 2-1 going into the last of the eighth. The key blow was a Josh Oswald’s two-out, two-run double which gave Clyman a 4-2 lead.

Shawn Wegner’s RBI single tied the game at 2-2. The first two batters in the frame got aboard on a walk and a hit by pitch, respectively, and they eventually scored.

The Flames took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the fourth on Matt Rhude’s double. Zac Cain, who led off the frame with a walk, and Jake Klemme, who singled with one out, scored on the double. Rhude was left stranded after the next two batters were retired.

Plymouth, which managed only five hits, had only four baserunners in the last five innings combined.

Rhude took the loss but was able to pitch out of several jams which kept the game close. He threw 7-1/3 innings and allowed four earned runs on 11 hits with 10 strikeouts, two walks and one hit batter.

Klemme pitched the final two-thirds innings and gave up no runs on one hit with one walk and zero strikeouts.

The Canners banged out 12 hits but left a whopping 14 runs on base. Wegner led Clyman’s attack with three hits. Brock Vredeveld, Mitch McCaffery and Parker Sadowski collected two hits each.

Cain paced Plymouth in hits with two.

Brock Vredeveld earned the win in relief after closing out the game with four scoreless innings. He surrendered only one hit and one walk while striking out five.

“Matt pitched well and kept us in the game,” said Flame manager Rick Meyer.

“They had good pitching. We just didn’t have enough [hits] but I credit their pitchers.

“We gave a good showing. It would’ve been nice to win,” added Meyer.

This was the first Tri-County League season for the Flames who slipped to 24-14 overall.
