Otten’s hat trick lifts Eagles over NH/EL-G

NEW HOLSTEIN – Senior Mathias Otten’s hat trick sparked Sheboygan Christian/Lutheran to a 3-1 boys soccer win over New Holstein/Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah here Tuesday night.

The nonconference match was the season opener for both teams.

Junior defender/midfielder Noah Ruh scored a goal on a penalty kick at the 9:30 mark in the first half which gave NH/EL-G a 1-0 lead. Ruh is a student at Elkhart.

Otten’s goal with 8:30 left in the first half tied the match at 1-1 at halftime. Stuart VerVelde assisted on the goal.

Otten converted two penalty kicks in the second half – the first at the 60:15 mark and the second at 79:13 – which put the Eagles up 3-1.

“They were a very good team. We just had a tough time controlling the ball and the speed of the game,” said new NH/EL head coach Steve Conrad.

The Eagles led 26-16 in shots on goal. Husky goalie Jordan Bahr, a senior at EL-G, made 19 saves.

The Huskies travel to Gibraltar Thursday, Aug. 25 for their Eastern Wisconsin/Packerland Conference opener.
