Panthers eke out win in ECC opener

KEWASKUM – Thursday afternoon’s boys soccer match was a frustrating one for the Plymouth Panthers but they were able to pull out a 2-1 victory over host Kewaskum.

PHS led 15-1 in shots on goal but had trouble denting the Indians’ packed-in defense. Kewaskum’s only shot on goal resulted in a goal by Jacob Heberer in the third minute which gave the home team a 1-0 lead.

The Panthers tied the game on Connor Joseph’s goal in the 31st minute, assisted by Mason Dale. The score was 1-1 at halftime.

Jacob Welsch scored the winning goal on penalty kick in the 67th minute.

The match was the East Central Conference opener for both teams. PHS raised its overall record to 2-0 while the Indians slipped to 1-3.

“The home team defended well and we just could not put it in the net,” said PHS head coach Rommy Herrera.

“We were always in control of the ball and had opportunities to score but in the last quarter of the field we were not calm enough to finish.

“I am happy with the win and now we just need to go back and continue improving and get ready for the next game,” said Herrera.

Kewaskum goalie Conner Enright made 11 saves. Saunders Gentine and Gabe Thull played in the goal for PHS.
