4-H Week open house Thursday

Wisconsin 4-H Clubs will celebrate the youth, alumni and volunteers who learn, teach and exhibit leadership in their communities and beyond during National 4-H Week, Oct. 2-8.

Sheboygan County 4-H will hold their Open House just prior to National 4-H Week Thursday, Sept. 29, at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth in the 4-H Youth Building at the south end of the grounds.

County programs will host open houses and introductory events to raise awareness about 4-H and the many ways Wisconsin 4-H youth and adults give back to their communities.

“Youth in Wisconsin 4-H programs develop leadership, communication, responsibility and collaboration — skills that aren’t taught in schools — from a young age by participating in activities across the state,” says Dale Leidheiser, program director of Wisconsin 4-H Youth Development. “Communities thrive on the contributions of 4-H youth, volunteers and alumni.”

As 4-H members, youth from five-year kindergarten to one year past high school also learn teamwork, critical thinking and communication to help prepare them for life-long success, while engaging in fun, hands-on activities, from livestock care to art, drama and technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Many 4-H clubs and groups around the state will also participate in 4-H National Youth Science Day.

This year’s project, Drone Discovery was developed by Cornell University Cooperative Extension. It’s a hands-on engineering design challenge that explores the science behind drones and how they are being used to solve real-world problems. Youth will learn everything from flight dynamics and aircraft types, to safety and regulations, to remote sensing and flight control.

Sheboygan County 4-H will be sharing this curriculum with youth alongside their partners at Spaceport Sheboygan during the Wisconsin Science Festival Oct. 20-22 at Spaceport Sheboygan.
