Tigers shake off slow start, earn BEC win

HOWARDS GROVE – After a slow start, the Howards Grove Tigers got rolling en route to a 3-1 boys soccer win over visiting St. Mary Catholic (Neenah) Thursday afternoon.

The Tigers improved to 5-1-1 in the Big East Conference (6-4-1 overall). The Zephyrs dropped to 1-5-1 in the BEC (2-7-2 overall).

The Zephyrs grabbed a 1-0 lead on a goal by Alex Albrecht at the six-minute mark in the first half.

HG answered quickly as Will Rautmann scored two minutes later to tie the game, 1-1. Blake Pedrin had an assist. The score was 1-1 at halftime.

Jordan Peterson’s goal in the 61st minute gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead. HG sealed the victory when Bryce Pedrin scored with three minutes left to make it 3-1.

“Overall, we played a really good game today against a tough St. Mary Catholic team. We were down early and on our heels a bit to start,” said Tiger head coach Bob Peterson.

“Once we got going we controlled the ball on our [offensive] side of the field a good percentage of the game. Our spacing was good but our touches were getting away from us too often and denying us some good-push opportunities.

“We did a better job of being patient and finding open guys quickly. Our defense was very good again tonight and they really cut off many opportunities for them,” said Peterson.

HG held a 13-7 edge in shots on goal. Tiger goalie Austin Bender made two saves. Zephyr goalie Spencer Juchniewich had seven saves.
