Eagles’ ball control keys win over Tigers

HOWARDS GROVE – Sheboygan Christian/Lutheran controlled the ball most of the match en route to a 3-1 boys soccer win over the Howards Grove Tigers here Friday afternoon.

The Eagles improved to 7-1 in the Big East Conference (9-1 overall), one game behind front-running Oostburg (8-0 in the BEC). The Tigers slipped to 5-2-1 in the league (6-5-1 overall) and are in third place.

“Sheboygan Christian/Lutheran played a very good game against us and really controlled the possessions a majority of the game. They executed with precision, speed and control,” said Tiger head coach Bob Peterson.

“They really swarmed around our offensive threats and denied us any good looks at the goal.”

The Tigers attempted only two shots on goal while SC/L had eight. HG goalie Austin Bender made five saves.

The Eagles took a 1-0 halftime lead on Brandon Wishman’s goal at the 32-minute mark. SC/L went up 2-0 on a goal by Logan Babler in the 64th minute, assisted by Wishman.

The Tigers cut the deficit to 2-1 on sophomore Will Rautmann’s goal at the 65-minute mark, assisted by Bryce Pedrin.

Mathias Otten’s goal pushed the Eagles’ advantage to 3-1 in the 80th minute.

“We played a better second half and maintained better spacing and ball control but still had a tough time creating any quality opportunities,” said Peterson.

“Our boys never gave up and continued to play hard, and I believe keep getting better every minute we play against good competition like today. We had our chances in this game but we need to improve in many areas moving forward.”
